A Year in Review, 2016

2016 came and went and it's finally time to take a look what happened this past year! At the beginning of 2016 I set some goals for myself.

Overall it was a good year! Let's see how it went, being totally honest throughout the process.

Travel to 5 new places

Completion: 100%

Nailed it! Had a great time traveling all over and seeing new things. This year I ended up seeing:

  1. Thailand
  • Bangkok
  • Chiang Mai
  • Pai
  • Koh Phangan
  • Krabi
  • Koh Lanta
  • Koh Phi Phi
  1. Edinburgh, Scotland
  2. St. Andrews, Scotland
  3. Kenya
  • Naivasha
  • Thika
  • Nairobi
  1. Zanzibar, Tanzania
  2. Valencia, Spain
  3. Alicante, Spain
  4. Granada, Spain
  5. Seville, Spain

I've put some pictures from my travels on 500px and Instagram if you want to check them out!

Run a 10K

Completion: 100%

Since having ACL reconstruction I wanted to make sure I got my knee back into shape, so I actually ran a few 10Ks this year. Some of them include the British Heart Foundation Run, Santa Fun Run, and Olympic Park 10k.

Run a Half Marathon

Completion: 100%

What a bitch this was. I ended up running in the Ealing Broadway half, which I later found out was one of the hilliest half marathons London has to offer. But, I ended up finishing in just under 2hrs, which is a PB!

Run a marathon

Completion: 0%

I really wanted to run 26.2 miles in one go, not a real race, but this did not end up happening. I think it has to do with all the traveling I did this year. I think this next year I'm going to stick to 10Ks.

Run 600km in the year

Completion: 75%

I ended the year having ran ~450km (279 miles). While I didn't exactly reach my goal of 600km, it's still pretty damn good. I hope to accomplish this in 2017 though!

Take a Language Course

Completion: 50%

This year I started to learn French using Duolingo and Babbel. While they provided a good starting point, they did not help much when it comes to pronunciation, which I direly need.

But, 2017 is off to a good start as I've already started lessons at the French Alliance. I didn't know how I'd feel about taking group lessons and was a little apprehensive, but it's truly fucking awesome.

Build a Software Project Every 4 Months

Completion: 100%

So that makes 3 in a year. If you're nerdy, you can see more on my coding blog.

Publish 4 Photos a Month - 83%

Completion: 83%

I bought a DSLR this past year and had the goal of learning more about photography. I took some classes, snapped a bunch of pictures, and spent some time learning a few post-processing techniques.

Unfortunately, there were two months where I didn't get around to publishing four photos. Still pretty good, but room for improvement.

I've put some pictures on 500px and Instagram. Let me know what you think! Constructive criticism is always welcome and appreciated.

Play football/soccer again

Completion: 0%

This just fell by the wayside. Oh well... We need to start playing after work more!

I'm looking to have my 2017 goals done pretty soon! Stay tuned!

Until next time...
